Places of Interest in the Historic Village of Hopedale
Alameda Inn The Alameda Inn was built by the Allison Brothers as a restaurant and boarding House. At one time it was also a Greyhound Bus Stop.
In 1992 a "few" dedicated bikers conceived the idea of the MOTORCYCLIST MEMORIAL dedicated to Brothers and Sisters lost. This dream slowly grew into reality with the formation of THE MOTORCYCLIST MEMORIAL FOUNDATION.
Site of the old Normal College Hopedale Normal College was founded by Cyrus McNeely and his wife Jane. He Donated 10 Acres of ground for the school and preliminary work was done in 1848-1856. Doors opened in 1855. It was the first Co-Ed college in Eastern Ohio. an unfurnished room as 15 cents a week and furnished was 50 cents. Tuition was $1.00 per week and there were no other costs. This college had the only the Gymnasium in this part of the state.
Cyrus McNeely Home Cyrus was the founder of Hopedale and the Hopedale Normal College. The home was originally a log cabin built around 1829 and was added onto over the years. It was used as an underground railroad for slaves that were transported from the South to the Canadian Border. Cyrus was an ardent abolitionist and sometimes acted as a guide to runaway slaves. This is now used as a private home.
Methodist Church This Church was founded in 1869 and the building standing today was built in 1973-1975. Clark Gable with his father William and stepmother Jenny Dunlap Gable were members. William was a Sunday School Superintendent at one time.
Site of the first school Clark Gable attended The parking lot next to the Church at one time held the Hopedale School. Clark Gable started school September 1907 at the age of 6 and attended school here until 1913. The school was a two-story building. Seven grades were located on the first floor and eighth through High School were on the top floor. After Normal College closed, the building was converted in 1913 to be used as a high school. He Completed his sophomore year at Hopedale in May of 1917. If he had remained in Hopedale he would have graduated in a class of eight. In 1925 a new school building was built on the site of the old Normal College lot.
First home of Clark Gable in Hopedale Clark Gable was born February 1, 1901 in Cadiz, but after his mother became sick, he and his mother were taken back to Pennsylvania in August of 1901, where his mother died. In the late summer of 1902, Bill Gable worked in the Scio Oil Fields and boarded at the home of the Dunlaps. On April 16, 1903 William Gable married Jennie Dunlap and he left for Pennsylvania to bring Clark back to his new home in Hopedale.
Childhood Home of Actor Clark Gable William Gable purchased land in 1904 and more in 1907. He finished the home in 1910. The Gable family lived here until they sold the home in August 6, 1917 and moved the second week of September to Ravenna, Ohio. Members of the Gable family and Hollywood personalities have visited this home. |
